Title: Joysticks
Post by: Sammy on December 01, 2013, 12:46:39 PM
Hey fellas

I'm in the hunt for a new joystick for a few games I've wanted to try through the holidays and I was seeing if anyone here has any experience with them? I've read a few threads and a lot of people have recommended the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for the price. Are there any others that you would recommend?

Cheerio

Yeah Sammy I've got the Force 3D Pro. Had no dramas with it apart from on ARMA but it's more ARMA than the joystick.

I got mine secondhand so I got it nice & cheap.

Only other one I've had was a Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback pro. I accually liked it better than the Logitech but being a sick that had the DB15 plug which has to plug into a soundcard game port I switched over to the Logitech.  The Microsoft on had much better & stronger feedback & it was real heavy which made it stay still on the desk.

I find the Logitech moves about a bit if you get rough with it. It would be fine if it was heavier. Might open it up & layer some lead in it or something.

Thanks Scorp and no worries Flat lol.

I watched this video Scorp and I don't know if this is what you were after to strengthen up your joystick a bit?

im assuming the plastic rings would grate against the base and scratch the shit out of it, which could effect maxed out stick rotations smoothness?

I dunno man. Maybe at that joystick's stage it was already fucked. Scorp (and Flat if you're interested) you should try out War Thunder. You can use a mouse and keyboard which does work pretty well but this game is the reason i bought a joystick. It's a very fun WWII mmo shooter and it is free to play. Uses the same system as Planetside 2

People have been loving war thunder. There is talks of a war of tanks/ war thunder kind of game being combined.

Yeah? That would be sick. It's a fun game and it has a massive learning curve which I'm still trying to get.

Here's something cool I'm in in the work with. You know TrackIR, that head tracking device that moves the camera based on your movement while keeping your body/vehicle moving in it's projected path? Well I've read up on it and I've found that you can actually build it yourself with a little soldering and electronics experience (absolute minimal, so anyone can pick it up). I'm looking at parts now. Will post updates when I get everything sorted.

the software for head tracking stuff is more important than the device, u can also find software that turns ur webcam into a headtracker
Title: Re: Joysticks
Post by: Sammy on December 05, 2013, 04:58:00 PM
I tried FaceTrackNoIR which doesn't require a head tracker but it was pretty shit. It worked, but it was jittery as fuck and it was a nuisance to centre it. I watched some videos of FreeTrack with the head trackers and it's pretty amazing and a huge improvement over the webcam face tracking software. The only problem I'm having is finding this particular type of infrared LED which seems to only exist in China. I'm looking at alternatives which no doubt need to be modded to work properly

Check out

RS components. They will have anything you need.

Let me know the design Sammy. I can make circuit boards etc.

Thanks Scorp. I ordered all the parts from RS at the low price of $8 with shit loads of spares so I could probably make a few.

Here is an update video for those interested:

do u think it could be smoother with several leds? and are u pointing it at a camera?, because i guess the fps of the camera would matter as well

It's a 30 fps camera and yes it would. I posted a small FAQ in the video description which clears a few things up.

Looks like youve got it working great Sammy.

I like the bouncy landing and the sigh of relief at the end.

All you need to do is tidy up the wiring on the ir head piece and it'll be apples.

Ill try to get mine working this weekend

Haha yeah I know. I'm probably going to make a case for it when I've got time. It's at a prototype stage. If you want a similar build to mine then I recommend 38 half degree IR LEDs I picked up from RS and 30 OHM resistors. With my 4.5v battery pack it pushes out 85 mA on the lights making them bright and suitable for evne the highest lit rooms.

I've sourced some 30deg LEDS and I'm thinking of powering it via USB. My keyboard has a USB port on it and my headphones already plug into it also.

Most LEDS operate on 1.2V so that means I'll need a 80ohm resistor to drop the voltage from 5V down to 1.2V

Did you use a template for the Led placement?

Yeah mate I referred to this post on the free-track website: http://forum.free-track.net/index.php?showtopic=1856

It is recommended to have ~40 half-degree (so total 80) so when you look from side to side the led is still being picked up by the webcam.

My joystick is pretty tight.

i can have multiple users controlling it pretty crazy its very ergonomic

Post by: SCORP on December 15, 2013, 10:17:09 AM
First attempt failed...

Dont quite know why but the LED's i bought from Jaycar would not light up using the 5v USB power... I can get normal LEDS to work fine but the IR ones would no work..

I'll order some from RS this week & just get the right ones.

Let me know how it goes. What are you using for the frame?
Title: Re: Joysticks
Post by: SCORP on December 16, 2013, 07:35:07 AM
Bit of coat hanger. It all looked awesome but did t work. Guess I should have tested the LEDs before I taped soldered and mounted the whole thing.

I've ordered the 40deg ones from RS should get them in a day or two.

I see u used 2 AA batteries I assume in series to give you 2.4v
Title: Re: Joysticks
Post by: Sammy on December 16, 2013, 12:19:13 PM
I used 3 AA batteries giving me 3.9v bro so I ended up using 30 Ohm resistors to get ~85 mA

I resistor on each led or did you do the series circuit?

On each LED bro. I drew up my circuit in paint bro which I've attached

Nice one Scorp. Can if you're keen I've still gone a few spare parts that I could put together and mail to you? The only thing missing is a power source (battery pack or USB).

And Scorp, Steam is having a sale on premium accounts/starter packs for War Thunder if you reckon you're going to get into it. I bought the ACE pack on their last sale for $28 US marked down from $40 US.

I think I know what the Freetrack problem is with ARMA

Apparently there is a output box you need to change from trackIR to Freetrack in the output tab of the Freetrack software.

Also apparently the frame rate of your webcam can effect the motion of the tracking.. Makes sense.. I've got a shit hot logitec one here Im going to take home & try.

I found the instructions to get Freetrack to work in Arma 2 from this thread:

Here are his instructions: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?90969-The-(un)Official-Freetrack-Users-Q-amp-A-Thread

Quote
1. *Download and install latest beta - make sure your launcher is set to launch the beta .exe file, with the beta folder as the first modfolder in line - a standard beta setup, in other words...
2. *Go to Freetrack install folder - look for FreeTrackClient.dll - it's part of Freetrack - it WILL be there... if it isn't, try installing the latest freetrack version and make sure you have "view hidden files" enabled in windows
3. *Copy FreeTrackClient.dll file to the arma2/beta folder
(I was just guessing that the requisite code is in the .exe, it'll be expecting it's associated .dll in the same directory)
Run Freetrack - go to the "Output" tab - make sure "FreeTrack Interface" is ticked, and "TrackIR Interface" is not - get Freetrack tracking and ready to go...
4. *Launch Arma2 - with beta
"Go to Options/Controls/Controller - make sure "missing string STR_Freetrack" (slight glitch there??) is visible and enabled...
5. *Go to editor, place a player unit and hit "preview"

My $20 webcam is set at 30fps. Let me know about your new awesome webcam. Remember to remove the IR filter and apply a light blocking filter (floppy disk) on the webcam and turn the anti-flickering off and the exposure all the way down to get the best results.

There is no Treetrack Interface on my freetrack software.. Only track IR on/off

I attached a picture bro of what you need to tick. It says to tick freetrack interface and untick trackir interface. I left mine on so I could play War thunder.
